In very wet conditions at the Spartan Academy, the 2 teams to make the final came together in what promised to be an exciting game of football. In the opening half, it certainly lived up to that.
The opening exchanges were in favour of the Letham team with a couple of shots on target. Their first shot on target brought out a fine diving save and catch from the Hibs keeper, which on this surface was made to look very easy indeed.
The next few chances all came Hibs way, with Ellie Fairgrieve and Rebecca Smith working very well together upfront and communicating well. Their first effort came from Ellie, a wonderful through ball from Rebecca Smith that forced the defence of Letham to have to up their work rate and clear the ball from danger. From the resulting corner, Ellie had a wonderful chance within 10 yards which the goalie blocked onto the bar and caught safely. It was all Hibs at this point and it was no surprise when the Letham defence slipped up that Caitlin Russell was on hand to touch and skip past the defence to unleash a rocket into the roof of the net.
The Hibs coaches made 4 changes at the halftime break, Lauren Watters and Caitlin Hall moving upfront, Dee replacing Megan in centre midfield and Caitlin Knox moving into RM. The changes proved to be a very good change indeed, with Chelsea linking up well with the midfield and unleashing a 25 yard shot which almost bounced over the goalkeeper.
It was all Hibs at this point and it was no surprise that one of the subs made the breakthrough to put Hibs 2-0 up. Lauren picked the ball up 40 yards out and played a quick 1 touch ball into the path of Caitlin Hall, who nutmegged the defender before producing a stunning 20 yard chip over the top of the goalkeeper. A sublime finish from the young striker.
Letham stepped up a little and played a superb ball in behind the defence and their No.10 ran onto it, but Erin Burns, on her first start since injury was more than equal to the task. Letham did almost get close enough to the goal when Dee slipped inside the box, the Letham midfielder playing a ball across the box with noone there to finish.
Erin Burns took a knock to the stomach and looked winded, so substitutes of Caitlin Russell was brought on, with Dee slipping to right back, Caitlin Knox into centre Midfield where Dee was, and Caitlin Russell going into the right of midfield.
Caitlin Hall scored her second of the game when a parried shot fell to her 8 yards out and she half volleyed the ball home. The young striker almost helped herself to the match ball when a 45 yard ball played through by Lauren Watters was picked up by Caitlin, unfortunately her shot was saved by the Letham goalkeeper.
Caitlin Russell almost added her second goal when she went within 10 yards of the goal, however her shot was narrowly over the bar.
The 4th and final goal came when Ellie chased a ball down the wing, the defender failed to clear, Ellie played a superbly chipped left foot ball into the back post where Kelsey hammered home with her left foot to complete the scoring.
It was a strong performance from the team with some solid defending by Jamie Lee Smith. There was even time for young goalkeeper Kirsty Jefferies to get a cameo appearance at the end of the game as an outfield player, who sadly was unable to play in goals due to a recent injury.
