Ellon Meadows remained top of the league after a convincing 4-1 win over Portlethen on Sunday. Ellon started brightly and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 8th minute. Ross Cartney showed good skill and pace on the right wing before cutting in to drive an unstoppable shot past the Portlethen keeper.
Ellon doubled their lead in 20 minutes when Aaron Macfarlane raced on to a through ball and cleverly lobbed the advancing keeper before stroking the ball into the net.
Portlethen were always looking dangerous on the break and it took a fine save from Gregor Ramsey to deny McLaughlin, the keeper bravely diving at the strikers feet when he was put through on goal.
Half Time: Ellon Meadows 2-0 Porlethen SC
Ellon continued to create chances in the second period with the hard-working Shaun Buckle and Ross Cartney, in particular, causing problems for the Portlethen defence. Cartney was the provider of the cross which led to Macfarlane's second goal of the game, the ball evading the Portlethen defence before being coolly finished by the striker.
Ellon made sure of the 3 points with 10 minutes to go. Cameron Munro played an inch perfect free kick into the penalty area where it was met by Ross Connon who finished well.
Portlethen grabbed a late consolation goal when McLaughlin prodded the ball past Ramsey after the strikers initial effort had been blocked.
Ellon travel to Culter Colts this weekend to face another team looking for promotion.

An overcast start to the match in Huntly quickly turned to frequent heavy showers and in amongst the rain, both teams pressed for the first goal. Culter, playing catch up in the league with games in hand, were desperate for the victory which showed in their early play being rushed with poor decision making in the last third of the pitch.
Eventually, Culter broke through the Huntly lines with both Adam Reid & Liam McKintosh having shots at goal but both off target. Not to outdone, Huntly pressurised the Culter defence on several occasions in the first half and Culter have Thomas Stewart to thank for keeping the Huntly strikers out. Culter had a couple of penalty shouts as well but waved away by the referee on the day.
As the half wore on, Shaun Corthels missed a chance in the 6 yard box after good work from Adam Reid and Liam McKintosh, looking more dangerous, struck the bar from outside the 18 yard box.
Half Time: Huntly FC 0-0 Culter Deeside
Moving into the second half it was still 0-0. Culter finally break the deadlock with probably their scrappiest goal of the season as Adam Reid eventually bundles the ball over the line. The goal seem to relax Culter as they quickly followed this up with another, Adam Reid this time with a good strike past the Huntly goalkeeper.
At 2-0 Culter started to switch off and Huntly grab their opener with their striker first to react to a long range parry from Thomas Stewart. At 2-1, it seemed it was game on again.
However, Adam Reid was on a mission for his hat-trick and finised in style with a fine strike after a nice turn in the box. 3-1 Culter…..
Euan Ross then goes close with a mazy dribble and shot but then gets the goal of the day with a fine volley into the top corner to make the final score 4-1 Culter.

Weather and pitch condition were sure to play a key part in this match, as the wind howled and the pitch had a definite incline in favour of Aberdeen in the first half.
It took time for the deadlock to be broken as the stand-in Montrose keeper was proving a good shot stopper, although had some trouble holding onto her saves. Aberdeen were unable to capitalise on the spills as much as they might have hoped.
Aberdeen continued the pressure and eventually were rewarded for their efforts by going into the half time break at 4-0 up.
Half Time: Aberdeen FCL Youth 4-0 Montrose Youth
Second half was an entirely different story, Montrose took full advantage of the conditions now in their favour and fought back honorably to 4-3 with about 10 minutes to go.
Aberdeen had a shot which deflected off the crossbar and back into play, then going onto score. Montrose hotly contested that it was out, but the referee saw otherwise for AFC to go 5-3 up.
Montrose pushed on again and found the net again but time was against them and a very relieved Aberdeen team took the victory by a narrow margin to progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup.
