Aberdeen vs Ross County - Under 16sWith both teams having had mixed fortunes in the Denis Law Tournament this week, Ross County and Aberdeen met in the final of the Consolation Cup.

The Dons came flying out of the traps and grabbed the lead after only two minutes.  Jamie Henry picked the ball up a good 25 yards out and unleashed a terrific strike, over the head of Iain McKenzie into the net.

Aberdeen had a chance to double their advantage in the 12th minute after some good work from Kalvin Orsi.  The youngster worked his way into the box from the left-hand side and fizzed a ball across the face of goal, however nobody was able to get the all-important touch.

Moments later, Ross County came with in inches of equalising.  Greg Morrison intercepted the keeper's throw-out, and before he could get back into position, tried a lob, but saw his effort bounce just wide.  Aberdeen went straight up to the other end though and had a great chance when Sam Robertson scooped his shot over the bar from close range.

The Dons were certainly on top at this point and Robertson went close again in the 19th minute, crashing a header off the crossbar.

In the 32nd minute Stuart Hodge showed good agility to beat his man on the edge of the box, but could only fire his shot just wide. With four minutes until the break, the Dons made it 2-0. A well worked move left Michael Jones with an easy finish at the keeper’s near post.

But Aberdeen had barely finished celebrating when County pulled a goal back, Greg Morrison getting on the end of a corner to power home a volley.

Just as they had the first, Aberdeen started the second half brightly. A brilliant touch to simultaneously control the ball and beat the defender in the box left Hodge with a good chance in the 41st minute. But having done the hard part, Hodge blazed his shot over the bar.

Aberdeen would only have to wait another five minutes though, until they did make it three. An Orsi corner found Sam Robertson, who made no mistake with his header.

Kalvin Orsi put his name on the scoresheet in the 52nd minute with a superb effort from wide on the left, curling over the keeper’s head into the top corner.

The 57th minute saw a rocket of a volley from Ritchie Petrie flash just over the top. A minute later though, Chris Blackett rounded up the scoring with Aberdeen’s fifth, a textbook downward header at the back post.

Overall, a deserved victory for the Dons. County were far from disgraced, but in the end Aberdeen’s dominance on the ground but particularly in the air prevailed.
