With the brutal winter conditions settling in, the pre-match preparations required Colts’ players and staff to sweep the pitch in order to keep the much anticipated game on.
The game kicked off and it was the visitors who started off on the front foot and with no real energy from the Colts’ midfield, Wasps kept the ball well and created a few good chances to score which Colts’ goalkeeper Stackpool dealt with well.
With the Wasps seeing more of the ball in midfield, a tactical substitution was required from the home side which saw a change in their midfield with Doogan replacing Moir.
Colts then started to get back into the match and with Colts’ hit man Trainer working tirelessly up front saw the hosts create some good chances of their own.
On the balance of play it was a very even game with both teams creating goal scoring opportunities, but it was Colts who took the lead in the match, after a scramble in the box the ball fell to the feet of Colts’ midfielder Matthew Doogan who superbly found the back of the net through a crowd of bodies.
Shortly after the goal, the referee then blew for half time which saw the home side go into the break with a narrow 1-0 lead.

The second half got underway and straight from the restart Colts dominated possession in the opposition half and it seemed like only a matter of time before they scored again. But the Wasps held strong and proved very difficult to break down at the back and with the score line remaining at 1-0 the game was in the balance.
Colts pressed and pressed for that elusive second goal, which would put some daylight between these two sides, and even with the home side playing some excellent football at times, a combination of top defending from the visitors and poor finishing from Colts meant that the scoreline remained the same going into the dying minutes of the game.
However, with five minutes left on the clock, Trainer broke through the opposition defence, after a great passing move, and with the chance to score he slotted the ball into the corner of the net to give his side an invaluable two goal cushion.
After the goal went in, Colts dominance in possession continued and they had more excellent chances to extend their lead further, but in the end they were able to play out a 2-0 victory to keep their title ambitions very much alive, as for the visitors, they can take a huge amount of credit from this match, proving difficult to beat and will no doubt take pride in their performance.
