East End Thistle put seven past Dundee West in their Trans World Soccer Scottish Youth FA Cup 3rd round match at Downfield playing fields. David McDonald started and finished the scoring in the match with Billy Campbell also grabbing a couple of goals for himself. Andrew Murdoch, Paul O’Hear and Gareth Cairney chipped in with goals themselves and the result sees East End Thistle comfortably through to the next round.

It was not long into the match when McDonald opened the scoring for East End Thistle. After latching onto a neat pass he found himself bearing down on goal and slotted past the Dundee West goalkeeper Connaire Dulley to make it 1-0.

Just a few minutes later Campbell extended East End’s lead to 2. The forward latched onto a ball that had been looped over the Dundee West defensive line and, despite being put under pressure by a challenging defender, managed to poke the ball beyond Dulley into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

The Dundee West back line were being made to work hard by the pace and power on show from the East End attackers.  On the 23rd minute they broke through once more. Campbell, with possession of the ball, drove into the opposition’s 18-yard box and dispatched his shot into the bottom right hand corner again. Despite Dundee West’s best efforts they were 3 down.

The one way traffic continued and on the 29th minute East End Thistle were awarded a free kick about 25 yards from goal. Gareth Cairney stood up to take the free kick and his effort came crashing back off the cross bar. Unfortunately for Dundee West the ball landed at the feet of Murdoch, who fired the rebound into the back of the net.

A few minutes after this and an opportunity fell the way of Dundee West. Robbie Low had made a great run down the right wing and into the penalty area. His low cross was blocked by a defender and the ball trickled agonisingly wide of goal.

In the closing minutes of the half McDonald had another pop at goal from 20 yards out. His effort flew just wide of the post.
Dundee West, to their credit, started to match up far better with East End Thistle in the second half. The match became a dogged midfield battle with neither side getting many clear-cut opportunities for the first 15 minutes. The first chance of the half fell again to McDonald who gained control of the ball in the penalty area but, just as he was shaping up to shoot, he lost his footing and hit the turf leaving Dulley able to claim the ball.

The next clear opportunity in the second half arose in the 72nd minute. After a skillful back heeled layoff from Paul O’Hear, Cambell drove into the penalty area on the right and sent a low cross into the six yard area where it was subsequently cleared by Dundee West’s Low. His clearance however was picked up by Dale Sproull, who played the ball to O’Hear on the edge of the box. His resulting shot flew high and wide of the target.

3 minutes later East End Thistle were celebrating their 5th goal of the game. O’Hear picked up the ball and, like so many chances previously, drove into the penalty area from the right. Dulley rushed out to meet him but the shot was too powerful for the keeper, despite getting his fingertips on it, and the ball nestled in the bottom left hand corner of the net.

On the 82nd minute the score became 6-0. Christopher Andrews won possession of the ball in the 18 yard box after closing down the Dundee defender. He then crossed the ball back across goal where Cairney was there to slot the ball home.

McDonald then rounded off the scoring on the 86th minute after latching onto a cross that had, again, come from the right. The defence were taken out of the game by the cross and he was left with a simple tap in from just a few yards out.

Just a minute later and it was very nearly an 8th goal in almost an identical move to the 7th goal. McDonald this time, however, failed to make contact with the ball from the cross. Cairney was behind him and did make contact but his effort was just wide of the post.

The final whistle went shortly afterwards and East End Thistle Blue’s confidence will sky high for their next few games after their strong display.

Robbie Low’s run in the first half. Caused problems for the East End back line and it nearly resulted in an own goal.
O’Hear’s back heeled lay off which initiated a move that nearly resulted in a goal. There were a few Rabona’s, or Lamela’s as we should say now, on show too.
