Glenafton Athletic
 vs
Bonnyton Thistle

U16's Trans World Soccer Scottish Cup

07 September 2014

The first half began quietly with neither team able to break the deadlock early on and was mainly a battle between the midfields.

It wasn’t until a Chris Thomson free kick from 30 yards out deceived the Bonnyton goalkeeper to give Glenafton the lead midway through the first half.

Bonnyton battled back strongly after conceding though and deservedly equalised after some continued pressure just before half time with a very well worked goal.

Half Time: Glenafton 1-1 Bonnyton Thistle

Glenafton started the second half strongly and took the lead again when Jack Grozier lept like a salmon to head them in front after sustained pressure.

Glenafton had many chances to get their third goal but were unable to kill the game off. Glenafton paid the penalty with only minutes remaining.

Bonnyton scored after poor attempts from Glenafton to clear the ball from danger fell to the Bonnyton winger who made no mistake in making it level and taking his team in to extra time.

Full Time: Glenafton 2-2 Bonnyton Thistle

Extra Time saw some tired legs and not many chances were made in the first period for either team.

With 20 minutes of extra time being played, Glenafton scored when Dean Sharp broke down the right and cut the ball back for Jack Grozier to drill a low shot past the Bonnyton keeper and his defence into the net from 12 yards out, putting Glenafton in to the lead for the third time in the match.

Again Glenafton failed to kill the game off when they squandered some great chances only for Bonnyton to score very late on to take the game to penalties and break Glanefton hearts once more.

Extra Time FT: Glenafton 3-3 Bonnyton Thistle

Bonnyton scored with their first penalty to make it 1-0, then Chris Tomson scored Glenafton’s first to make it 1-1.

Bonnyton scored again and then watched Glenafton’s Jordan Kirkpatrick miss, meaning Glenafton were now 2-1 ahead.

Glenafton goalkeeper, Jack Cunningham then saved Bonnytons next penalty with Ryan O'Donnell scoring for Glenafton to bring it back to level terms at 2-2.

Bonnyton scored again, then Josh Notman for Glenafton made no mistake coolly slotting his penalty home to make it 3-3.

It was now down to sudden death with one kick remaining for each team. Glenafton keeper then saved down at his right hand side brilliantly only to let out an almighty scream as he had injured his right arm.

Both teams’ first aiders attended to him and it was discovered he had dislocated his elbow - so before the next penalty could be taken we had to wait for an ambulance to come to attend to Jack. The game was halted for 30-40minutes. Jack was taken to hospital.

It was down to Dean Sharp to see if he still had the confidence to finish the tie. Dean then sent the keeper the wrong way into the bottom corner of the net to the delight of his team mates and everyone connected with Glenafton.

Glenafton won 4-3 on penalties.

Goalkeeper Jack Cunningham went through an operation on Wednesday to pin his elbow as it was also broken as well as dislocated. Unfortunately, doctors have told Jack to expect to be out upto 8 months but hopefully he makes a full recovery and comes back stronger.
