Villa Park travelled to Airdrie hoping to gain revenge for defeat by their opponents in a Regional Cup tie last season.
However, it was Gartcairn who threatened first with some strong running down the flanks and dangerous crosses putting the Motherwell side’s rear guard under intense pressure.
Gartcairn drew first blood with a wicked free kick which evaded everyone and ended up in the net to put the home side in to the lead.
Villa Park roared back not long after when Evan Johnstone won the race to the ball with the keeper and managed to calmly slot home the equaliser.
Gartcairn went in front again with another dangerous free kick causing havoc in the Villa box before eventually being prodded home.
The visitors fought back once more, bringing it back to level terms before the break. This time sub John McFadden latched onto a free kick to score at the second attempt to make it 2-2 before the interval.
Half Time: Gartcairn 2-2 Villa Park BC
The game settled down after the interval with both sides threatening at times but as the match wore on Villa Park took control and looked stronger with every passing minute.
The Villa defence was mopping up anything Gartcairn could throw at them comfortably. Villa Park launched attack after attack and were eventually rewarded with a late winner when Johnstone notched his second.
Johnstone cut in from the left and tried a shot from the edge of the box which went through the keepers legs to seal a hard fought victory.
A hard fought tie between the two teams with only one goal able to separate the two teams. An excellent display which, in the end, saw Villa Park progress to the second round of the Scottish Cup.
Full Time: Gartcairn 2-3 Villa Park BC
