03 March 2014
On Saturday 1st March Milton Reds 1998’s under 16’s, travelled to play Dunipace Juniors in their League Cup section match. Milton are in a section of 5 teams who will play each other once then the top two teams will progress to the quarter finals of the tournament. The grass park at Dunipace has taken plenty of water recently and players from both sides found it very difficult to keep their footing.
The match started with Milton pressing forward and putting the home side under pressure. Dunipace were defending deep and constantly under pressure from the eager Milton forwards with Gray in the home goal being brought into action numerous times.
After a number of close efforts Milton finally opened the scoring when mid fielder Ross Leary played a delightful pass through to forward Callum Brown who took a great touch before slipping past his two markers and then with good composure firing the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Milton then threatened to increase their lead as they continued with the relentless pressure on the home goal. In the 30th minute Milton were awarded a penalty when mid-fielder Declan Valentine was brought crashing to the ground inside the Dunipace box. Valentine had been playing excellently throughout the game but had to leave the field due to the injury to his wrist as he was brought down. Bobby Smith who had been the two goal hero in last weeks match was entrusted with the spot-kick but his well struck shot was turned away with a tremendous full length save from Gray in the home goal.
Milton were made to regret their missed opportunity as within 5 minutes, in a rare breakaway, Dunipace levelled the match. A ball from out on their left was fired into the Milton goalmouth and keeper Liam Stirling could only parry the ball across goal and Dunipace forward Craig Martin was on hand to head home for the equaliser. The remainder of the half was played out with no further scoring therefore the first half ended with the sides level at one goal apiece.
Half Time: Dunipace Juniors 1-1 Milton Reds
At the restart Milton continued to have the majority of play but Dunipace were always dangerous on the break. In the 10th minute of play a shot from out on the Dunipace right looked to be going straight to Milton’s keeper Liam Stiling but the ball skidded under the keeper and now Dunipace were a goal up and were eager to keep that advantage although they were fortunate to be in front.
Milton dug deep and increased the pressure on the home defence as time ticked away. After a few close efforts for Milton but Dunipace still dangerous on the break, Milton finally levelled the match. There was barely 2minutes left when Milton were awarded a free kick midway into the Dunipace end Brown picked out Smith with a slick pass but his’s cross was blocked but Smith’s second effort made its way through to mid-fielder Leary who fired the ball into the bottom corner for a well deserved equaliser.
Full Time: Dunipace Juniors 2-2 Milton Reds
As each team play each other once in the section games the match is then decided on penalties. The sides were level 3 goals apiece after the first five allotted kicks each so then went to sudden death.
Each side scored their next three penalties each before ex Dunipace player Greig Ballatyne who now plays for Milton Reds netted his and then watched as his opponent sent his effort over the crossbar. The teams congratulated each other and now look forward to the remainder of the matches in this competitive section of the cup.
