 Aberdeen FC Ladies Under 15s overcame an injury-hit Deveronvale side on Saturday lunchtime to claim the North Region Girls League Cup. Injuries meant the Vale side included 10-year-old Flora Bruce as well as 11-year old Jodie Strachan. A broken wrist to their normal keeper also meant centre-back Katie Rose Allan would have to play in between the sticks for the first time.
The odds were stacked against Deveronvale but they started on the front foot and dominated the opening five minutes. Nairne McAllan had a good chance in the opening minute before a Donna Paterson rocket from 30 yards hit the inside of the post and somehow stayed out.
Aberdeen were not favourites for nothing though, and they scored with just about their first attack on six minutes. Lauren Gordon got the goal in spectacular fashion with a looping effort from a long way out, wide on the left.
Gordon went close with another shot on nine minutes, but the keeper parried her shot away. It was 2-0 in the 21st minute though, thanks to a composed finish from Amy Phillips, finding the bottom corner from inside the box.
Vale reacted well to the second goal and Rachel Morrison crashed a shot off the Aberdeen bar on 25 minutes. Morrison was then involved again two minutes later when the ball fell to her in the box. But the striker dragged her shot wide when she had more time than she thought.
Gordon was inches away from grabbing Aberdeen’s third moments before halftime. She was stretching to get on the end of a ball across goal at the back post, but couldn’t quite get there.

 The Dons started the second half the livelier, with Megan Reid jinking past a defender in the box before having her shot blocked. Some superb work on the left from Shannon McGregor in the 46th minute culminated in a dangerous cross being volleyed just wide by Reid.
Deveronvale were desperate to get back into the game and Morrison was put through one-on-one in the 48th minute, but shot straight at the keeper.
Five minutes later Steff Norris had a half chance for Vale as there was a bit of a scramble in the box, but Aberdeen got it clear.
With Vale throwing bodies forward looking to get a goal back, they were left short in defence and the Dons took advantage with seven minutes to go. Gordon split open the defence with a brilliant ball through to Phillips who coolly finished past Allan into the bottom corner.
One minute from time Vale grabbed a well-deserved consolation in the shape of a magnificent Donna Paterson free kick from wide on the right. It was Aberdeen’s day though, and they would have the last word as Isabella Robb blasted home emphatically at the near post from close range in the dying seconds of the game to give her side a 4-1 victory.
All in all, Aberdeen were deserving of their win, but huge credit must go to Deveronvale for putting up the fight they did. A special mention must also go to the youngsters Flora Bruce and Jodie Strachan who held their own playing against much older players and did not look out of place. Take nothing away from Aberdeen though who played some excellent football and crucially took their chances.

Amanda Allan, Coach of Deveronvale, said: "We’re absolutely chuffed to bits with the performance that the girls put in. We’re, on average, four years younger than the Aberdeen side. Unfortunately our keeper broke her wrist on Sunday, so Katie who was our centre-back decided to step in. Obviously she was nervous, she’s never ever played in that position before but she knew that it was for the team.
He continued: "We had to draft people in, on the pitch there we had seven girls aged 11 and 12, so they put in a sterling performance. We had quite a few chances, one-on-ones, just never took them. Aberdeen took their four chances which was unfortunate for us, but they never stopped. Young, young side, great determination from them, and I couldn’t be more proud." |

Derek Gordon, Coach of Aberdeen, said: "Absolutely superb, the girls worked really hard. I feel sorry for Deveronvale as well because their keeper had broken her wrist before the game, and they had to put a substitute in which benefitted us but didn’t help them. I do feel for Deveronvale that way, but our girls deserved it. They’re working hard, training three times a week, so yeah, absolutely brilliant.
He continued: "We had some good goals. Lauren Gordon scored, she’s a left-footer and that first goal with her right foot outside of the box was absolutely superb. We took our goals well, I’m happy, absolutely delighted."
