Trinity High School is celebrating after winning the 2013 Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Plate with a thrilling 4-3 victory against Wishaw’s Coltness High School.

The Rutherglen school dominated long spells of the final at Kirkintilloch Rob Roy Juniors but were made to sweat by a late Coltness charge.

Trinity started brightly with Dylan Henry proving a constant threat to the Coltness rearguard. The midfielder twice went close to opening the scoring, first with a header which dipped onto the roof of the net and then with a powerful strike from distance which Robbie Gardner did well to hold in the Coltness goal. Trinity’s early pressure was almost undone when Gerald Caruana was caught in possession at the back allowing Jon McCraken to race clear on goal, only for keeper Paul Monaghan to smother at the striker’s feet.

That save proved pivotal as Trinity opened the scoring just moments later. Henry powered towards the Coltness defence before hitting a low shot which bobbled over the outstretched reach of Gardner and into the net. Trinity went 2-0 up on the stroke of half time when Declan McDonald showed great pace to latch onto a long clearance and beat the on-rushing Gardener with a delightful chip.

Henry looked to have put the result beyond doubt just three minutes into the second half, calmly slotting home from the penalty spot. Coltness had other ideas however and replied within 10 minutes, Euan Scott scoring straight from a corner. John Kelly added a fourth for Trinity before McCraken pulled another back for Coltness by scrambling home a close range header.

With just under 10 minutes to go, the comeback looked on as Coltness made it 4-3 with a brilliant finish from Scott. Their big chance to draw level fell to striker McCraken who was sent clean through on goal only to see his shot saved by the legs of Monaghan.

Despite the fightback Coltness couldn’t find the all-important equaliser and Trinity held on to seal the U13 Plate.

Alan McIntyre, Bank Manager at Lloyds TSB Scotland Kirkintilloch, who watched the match said: “I would like to congratulate Trinity High on winning the Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Plate Final. It was a terrific final and both teams should feel proud of their achievements.”
