On Sunday 5th May the Oban Saints U14s took part in their annual fundraising activity. This year they decided to do something a bit different and ran in the local ABCD (Argyll Beats Cardiovascular Disease) 10K event. On the day of the event all 26 members of the squad completed the course in strong winds and heavy rain but were well supported by a good number of parents and other well wishers.

The Oban Saints youth teams compete in the Dumbarton Football Development Leagues (DFDL) and have teams in each age group from U16s to U13s and also operate development groups at primary school age. Oban Saints hold the Community Award through the SFA quality mark scheme and have recently entered into a partnership agreement with Oban High School. This will help enable all youngsters in the area that would like to participate in football have access to coached sessions regardless of ability.

Due to the fact that the teams have to travel to play competitive football this means that there are significant running costs and as such the teams have to carry out various fundraising activities. When the players of the U14s were asked what they would like to do this year, one of them suggested the annual 10k run. It was discussed and agreed that the boys would have to take part in a 6 week training program in the build up to the event to ensure that they were prepared for the run. Each and every one of the players showed great commitment to the event and impressed local people were soon talking about the boys being seen about the town “out for a run”. This made it a bit easier on the boys to fill their sponsor forms for club funds and the ABCD charity.

Throughout the course of the season the boys have training sessions on a Monday 7 to 9 and Friday 4 to 6 and play in the league on a Sunday morning. Since they have started training for the 10k they have also been meeting on Tuesday or Wednesday nights. The commitment and effort that the young players have shown this season (and last) has had a positive effect on the park and the team currently tops the league with only one match to complete. They have already bagged the League Cup with victory over Lochgilphead Red Star at Dumbarton FC's Bet Butler Stadium.

The coaches Joe MacIntyre, Donald MacLean and Scott Cooper have been so impressed with the player’s dedication, commitment and work rate this season that they decided to try and reward the boys for their efforts by arranging a trip to Alton towers at the season end.

Joe MacIntyre said “we asked a number of local businesses if they would like to support the boys in the 10k and in return the players each ran with the logo of the business attached to the back of his shirt. The boys themselves did not know this was happening right up to the last minute so it also gave them a boost when they realised just how much local support they were receiving. All the parents and coaches are proud of the boys and they have conducted themselves brilliantly wherever they have been this season. They have been excellent ambassadors for the town and young players in general”. Donald MacLean added “we would like to thank all the businesses that supported the boys in the event. We would also like to give a special mention to Patrick McIntyre who completed the 10K event with a fantastic time of 47 minutes”.

When asked about the hopes for the season run in, Scott Cooper replied “the boys have been terrific all season and we just hope that they have enjoyed their football thus far. As long as they enjoy the experience of the cup final then we will be happy.”

The Oban Saints U14s will now attempt to create their own piece of history and become the first youth team from Oban to complete the league and cup double which would cap an excellent season for a fine bunch of boys.
