Cults advance in national cup after Grove win

Cults vs Grove Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Shield U13Cults Academy advance into the next stage of the Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Shield a 5-2 win, despite the score line it was a highly contested game. 

Cults looked dangerous early on. A Cults player used some great pace to get down the wing. He made it to the left corner of the field and tried to send a ball into the box but Taylor Berry intercepted it well. A minute later Cults Ac. had another chance when a Cults player was nearly played through on goal, but Ross Jamieson made a great tackle. 

Grove made their first attack in the 3rd minute. Euan Snedden plays it to Andrew Lyall who then did a one two with Cameron Steedman. Andrew Lyall then looked to play a ball into the box but he was tackled.

Grove had a free kick in the 5th minute. The ball looked dangerous as it was fired into the box but a Cults defender managed to header it clear. In the 7th minute a Cults player came close to scoring with an impressive overhead kick from just outside the box but it went narrowly over the bar.

Andrew Lyall showed some great skill with another fantastic touch, he controlled the ball well and sent it up to Zack Robertson who then won a corner kick. The corner was taken in the 8th minute, it was played straight across the face of the goal but no one could touch it into the net.

Cults Academy scored in the 15th minute. Cults attacked very quickly with some fast passing moves up the field, Ryan Cotharls was then played through the defence and then tapped it around the keeper making it 1-0.

A minute later, Cults were 2-0 ahead. In the 16th minute Ben Ross controlled the ball well just outside the box. He then struck the ball towards goal and it went straight into the top corner, the keeper had no chance of reaching it.

In the 18th minute the Grove keeper made a great punching clearance in the box, but he then went down with an injury. He looked like he hurt his leg whilst clearing the ball. After being treated he got up fine.

In the 20th minute Cults seemed to be too far ahead to catch as they got a third goal. The ball was sent to the back post where Ryan Cotharls was running in. He controlled the ball at his feet and put it past the keeper making it 3-0 to Cults Academy.

Adam O’Donnell made a great sliding interception in the 23rd minute, breaking up a dangerous Cults attack. Cults were soon pressuring the defence again though when a long ball sent to a Cults player, the player shot towards goal but Callum Byres made a great diving save.

Jack Ferrier made a great run down the wing beating a Cults player. He looked to keep going past another but the Cults defender made a strong tackle. Grove kept pressing the Cults defence looking to get back into the game but they couldn’t get through. When the half time whistle blew, the teams left the field with the score at 3-0.

Cults vs Grove Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Shield U13When the second half kicked off, Grove looked eager to attack. Matthew Couttie went through the defence in the 40th minute but a Cults defender stopped him with a last ditch tackle.

In the 47th minute, Cults Academy made it 4-0. Aidan Wilkinson went past a Grove defender and then slipped it past the Grove keeper.

Grove kicked off and they still hadn’t given up on the game. They moved the ball up field straight away, searching for a chance to score. Jack Ferrier had a shot at goal in the 48th minute but the Cults goalkeeper made a great save.

Groves hard work paid off in the 51st minute, Adam O’Donnell made it 4-1. O’Donnell put it past the keeper and sparked some hope in the team.

Mark Smith came close in the 55th minute when he sprinted towards the Cults box and took a shot at goal, but his attempt hit the cross bar. Grove started to look dangerous when attacking and could score again.

Zack Robertson scored in the 57th minute for Grove making it 4-2. Robertson burst down the wing then cut in towards the box. He struck the ball towards goal and it went into the top corner.

Grove had a corner in the 60th minute. The ball was swung into the centre of the box but the Cults defence managed to scramble the ball clear. Both teams were fighting hard for possession, the ball was being sent back and forward as Grove looked to try and equalise and Cults tried to increase their lead.

Cults scored again in the 68th minute. Ryan Cotharls was having a great game and he topped it off with a hatrick. Cults had a free kick and Cotharls stepped up to take it. The players came up with a clever set piece. Two players stood in front of the ball, they both separated just before Cotharls was about strike the ball. The free kick was successful as Cotharls shot dipped nicely into the top corner.

Soon after the final whistle blew, Cults Academy’s impressive display led them into the next stage of the Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Shield. Grove played well and their second half performance was good to watch

Andrew Lyall was my man of the match because he showed some impressive skill through the game. His skillfull touches created some good chances.

Ryan Cotharls was my man of the match because he scored an impressive hat trick, and his creative free kick could have easily been the best goal of the game.
