Carnoustie HS qualified for the semi finals of the Lloyds TSB Scotland Senior Girls Shield in fine style with a 5-1 win over Hawick HS.

The girls from the Borders, some of whom were in last year's U15 Shield winning squad, started brightly, forcing the home keeper to turn the ball round the near post for an early corner. Hawick led by the impressive Lauren MacKenzie penned Carnoustie in their own half for the first ten minutes, but they could not capitalise on their good work, the final ball frequently proving to be out of reach for their strikers. Jennifer Meek in the Carnoustie goal was always alert and quick off her line as she raced out to gather everything aimed towards her.

Hawick's best attempt came after 10 minutes with a shot heading for the postage stamp till Jennifer Meek punched it onto the post and away for a corner.

After weathering the early storm Carnoustie worked their way gradually into the game.  Following a fairly even spell, the home team, looking like Athletic Bilbao in their red and white stripes and black shorts, suddenly assumed control of the game and swept the visitors aside with devastating finishing.

A throw-in on the left looked harmless enough but the resultant Carnoustie attack forced the Hawick keeper to kick clear, but only as far as Olivia Mitchell who fired the ball back past the keeper from a few yards out, 1-0.

Four minutes later a Carnoustie corner on the left fell to Olivia Mitchell and the striker lofted the ball over a ruck of players for 2-0.  Hawick were stunned again four minutes later as Olivia Mitchell outpaced the central defence, ran wide left of the keeper and calmly finished from close range to complete her hat-trick inside 8 minutes, 3-0.

Hawick hit back soon after the break and a fiercely struck shot from the edge of the box reduced the leeway, 3-1.  But the home team looked to be in confident mood and, with Holly Napier outstanding in midfield, there was a determination not to let the chance slip.

A ball down the right channel gave Olivia Mitchell something to chase - the Hawick keeper came out in vain, the hat-trick heroine won the ball wide right and from an acute angle touched the ball past keeper and defenders who could only watch as it trickled over the line at the far post, 4-1.

After scoring all four goals for her team, Olivia Mitchell should have made it five with ten minutes left, but when the cross from the right found her unmarked at the far post, everybody was surprised to see her knock the ball over the bar.

She quickly made amends in the next minute with a run down the left wing and cross into the goalmouth which Nicola McKenzie headed in from a yard out, 5-1.

Although the game could have gone either way in the first half-hour, Carnoustie then grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and fully deserved their place in the semi-final, thanks to an athletic performance by the keeper, a no-nonsense approach from the central defence, an impressive midfield display and the superb striking of four-goal Olivia.

With other games still to be played, Carnoustie will need to wait to find out their semi final opponents - it could even be an Angus derby if Webster's get through, and Carnoustie having already disposed of Forfar might relish that prospect.
