Professional Football Academy played host to Gairdoch United at Logan’s Road Park in this close and exciting encounter.

The game started at a fast pace as both teams were eager to get in front early and also to warm up on a chilly morning in Motherwell.

The first good chance fell to Professional Football Academy when Connor Swan found some space at the back post but his volleyed effort from a tight angle went just over the bar.

The best chance of the first half fell to Scott Honeyman of Gairdoch. In the build up there was some excellent play on the left wing by Josh McCue and his cross was put it on a plate for Honeyman but his side-footed effort went just wide.

The away side were able to create another good opportunity just before halftime and this time it was McCue with the opportunity to score himself but his shot from just inside the box was well saved by Aidan Glavin in the PFA goal.

Gairdoch continued to be the better team at the start of the second half and it they took the lead after 45 minutes, also through the best player on the park.

McCue found himself in some space at the edge of the box and he was able to time his run into the box perfectly and his brilliantly timed volley went straight into the top corner giving the goalkeeper no chance and putting his side into a deserved lead with half an hour remaining.

It was up to PFA to mount a immediate response but they had struggled for most of the game to create any clear cut chances and break down a solid Gairdoch defence.

The away side were again the better team in the second half and they were able to win numerous free kicks to slow the game down and see the game out.

One of those free kicks resulted in McCue again forcing Glavin into a smart save down low.

Ultimately Gairdoch were able to see the game out, despite some late pressure from PFA, and they can take good confidence from their solid away performance.
