Gartcairn secured the treble as they overcame a nine-man Kirkfield United in the blistering sun at the Falkirk stadium.

The heat was definitely on for both sides as Kirkfield looked for revenge on Gartcairn having been beaten by them six days previous in the league cup final. Gartcairn were on the hunt for a domestic treble and two Craig Cummings goal inspired Gartcairn to do so.

It was a slow start to the game. Both teams trying to adapt to the conditions and making sure not to over exert themselves.

The only real chance fell to Jason Stevenson as he raced through one-on-one with Kirkfield Goalkeeper Tom Crawford. Gartcairn were first to score, Cummings getting the first of his brace in the 28th minute after some lovely build up play by Gartcairn put him through one on one with Crawford and he made no mistake in finding the net. Sam Anderson was desperate to level the score, making a fantastic box to box run, but he could only sting the palms of Drew Gorrie.

Kirkfield levelled just before the break. A corner from the left hand side caused havoc in the box and Gorrie couldn’t claim it, allowing Finlay Patrick to burst the empty net to give Kirkfield a huge boost going into the break.

Kirkfield were dealt a major blow early in the second half, with William Renwick seeing red as Gartcairn looked to have been going clean through on goal. From here it was always going to be an uphill battle for Kirkfield but they showed great determination and hunger to stay in the game.

They were pressing Gartcairn all over the park and it was hard to tell that they had a man sent off. Goal scoring opportunities were few and far between, Gartcairn seeing the odd half chance.

Eventually the extra man began to show and they grabbed a crucial goal in the 83rd minute, putting a fine curled effort into the bottom left hand corner. Gorrie was called into action shortly after, making a big save to his left after Kirkfield captain Jordan Fraser tried his luck from the edge of the area. It was all over on the 90th minute, William Renwick firing past the goalkeeper despite the Kirkfield players believing it should not have counted.

Greg Brown vented his frustration with a reckless tackle which seen him dismissed.

The final score did not tell the whole story of the game as Kirkfield pushed Gartcairn all the way. It proved too much of a steep task for them and Gartcairn just about edged it over the 90 minutes and ultimately deserved their victory and domestic treble.

Craig Cummings as a constant menace for the Kirkfield backline. He caused havoc and was hard to deal with at points, deserving of his two goals.
It wasn’t about individuals for Kirkfield, rather a team effort. Every man played their role admirably to make sure they didn’t crumble under the heat and pressure of playing with 10 men. It proved too much in the end but it was a monumental effort.

Craig Cummings second goal all but sealed the victory. It gave them the added incentive needed to get the victory and the County Cup.
Sam Anderson’s marathon run from his own box to the opposition’s box gave his team mates the inspiration they needed to get back into the game with great passion and determination. It paid dividends, with Kikfield equalizing shortly after.
