Dunbeth netted on either side of half-time to record a comfortable FVFDA League Cup final victory over Dunblane at the Falkirk Stadium.

The Coatbridge club were the first to apply pressure and with just two minutes on the clock Aidan Gibb’s dangerous cross was headed wide by Aidan Stewart.

In the eighth minute, Dunbeth were at it again as Marc Lerey found space inside the penalty area but his strike was stopped by the leg of Robin Turnbull.

They were in no mood for slowing things down and on 15 minutes, Liam Hughes broke down the right and provoked a save at the near post. Lerey then cracked the rebound off the post before Dunblane scrambled clear.

However, Dunbeth got the goal they deserved in the 25th minute when an accurate ball in from the right found Stewart, who produced an exquisite half-volley on the turn to put his side in front.

On the half, they almost made it two.

Stewart turned provider to tee up Gibb but the midfielder’s shot was dragged narrowly wide of the post.

The second half continued in much the same vein, and in the 41st minute McDonald shattered the woodwork after evading the attention of two players.

Dunblane were handed a lifeline in bizarre circumstances in the 56th minute when Euan Anderson was brought down outside the box and his side were handed a penalty.

Stuart Thomson stepped up to take the kick but the goalkeeper got down well to his right to produce a fine stop.

Dunbeth doubled their lead in the 61st minute when the ball fell kindly for Lerey and he placed his finish into the bottom left corner beyond the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper.

Dunblane tried to force themselves back into proceedings and five minutes later they almost did. Sam Morrison’s left-footed free-kick from 25 yards was inches from the target.

The final chance of the match fell to Dunbeth’s Drew Morrice when he latched on to a searching ball and raced towards goal. The goalkeeper reacted quickly, however, to narrow the angle and stop the ball with his feet.

The goalkeeper's stop to deny Stuart Thomson from the spot was a moment of real quality.
