Hamilton made it six SPFL Development League home wins in seven matches with a battling 3-0 win against Rangers on a drizzly night at New Douglas Park. The scoreline did not reflect the contest as a whole, however, as Rangers more than matched the hosts.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton was watching on from the stands as a Jesus Garcia Tena penalty and an owl goal from Jason Krones put Hamilton 2-0 up at the break before Steven Boyd added a third with a close range finish.

Both sides passed the ball around in abundance in the opening fifteen minutes, but both lacked any cutting edge in front of goal.

Hamilton took the lead in the 17th minute with the first real attack of the game. Jamie Mills brought Greg Docherty, who had a clear sight on goal, down in the area and the referee awarded a spot kick. Garcia Tena made no mistake, sending Robby McCrorie the wrong way.

Hamilton extended their lead in the 21st minute. A long diagonal ball from Docherty found Ben Reilly in space on left as he charged to the edge of the box. He picked out Steven Boyd inside the area who unselfishly tried pulling it back to Reilly for a tap in, but it fell into the path of Jason Krones who deflected the ball into his own net.

Rangers fought back and should have got back into the contest. Jordan Gibson turned Shaun Want in the area, but his shot destined for the bottom corner was blocked by Garcia Tena.

They went close again - this time a delightful through-ball from Scott Roberts played Luke Burt in on goal, but he lacked composure and his effort narrowly drifted over Alex Marshall’s crossbar.

Rangers picked up where they left off in the second half as Burt’s shot had Marshall scrambling across his goal, which luckily for him it went a yard wide.

Hamilton should have made it three moments later though, when Reilly showed excellent vision to pick out Boyd in the box, who had all the time in the world to compose himself, but he blazed his attempt high over the bar.

Boyd redeemed himself in the 61st minute by putting his side 3-0 up, guiding an effort home inside the area from Danny Redmond’s lay off.

The home side had to see out the last twenty minutes with ten men, Garcia’s dangerous tackle on Gibson was deemed a straight red from referee Matthew MacDermid which seemed harsh on the Spaniard.

Marshall kept his clean sheet intact tipping a Luke Burt effort over for a corner before denying Burt again late on, getting down well to deny a fizzing effort that was finding the bottom corner.

Overall it was a solid performance from Hamilton who leapfrog St Mirren into second place in the SPFL Development League after their draw with Celtic on Monday night.

Star Player
Hamilton Academical
Rangers
Ben Reilly - His pace caused Rangers all sorts of problems down their left flank.
Luke Burt - If Rangers were going to score it would have been from him. Several attempts at goal and created good openings for his team, deserved more.
Magic Moment
Hamilton Academical
Rangers
Ben Reilly - His solo run from just inside his own half played a huge part in the second goal.
Jordan Gibson - Showed quick feet to skip past two players to get himself into a dangerous attacking area before the challenge from Garcia Tena earned him the straight red.
