Cambuslang Football Academy was set up in 2013 by David Buchanan and Barry Fleming simply to “give kids in the local area a game of football”. Since then Cambuslang has evolved massively with just the original team extending to ten teams, now ranging from different age groups. They even have a girls section starting this November, with a view to them playing in a league beginning in March.
Despite having such a quick and successful evolution, Cambuslang are refusing to stand still and are looking at getting their hands on facilities which would allow all the clubs players to train at the same location. This would give the place a homely feel and would without a doubt help the club attract new players. Although Cambuslang are showing very high ambition on this front, David Buchanan is still keen for the club to ensure stability financially, but more so to ensure the club goes forward as a unit and remains together.
One of the benefits of Buchanan’s relaxed view to football, looking to “give kids a game”, is how welcoming the club seems, both to current players, players who may be looking to join the club or even just outsiders watching the club from a step further back. Buchanan also said that “football is for all, regardless of ability” and stressed that Cambuslang would never turn a player away, at any age group.
As well as having 210 registered players, the club also has 17 voluntary coaches, who have the kids enjoyment and ability at their best interests at all times. Buchanan himself is now Director of Football at the club and oversees things from above, ensuring that the kids get the best experience possible. He takes great enjoyment in this role and is hugely proud of the developments of the club in recent years.
Credit to David Buchanan and Barry Fleming for creating a club with such a positive and friendly vibe to it. Good luck to Cambuslang at all ages groups this season, and we wish the club the best for the future.
