Written by  Cleland Boys Club

Fixture: Cleland Boys Club v Lanarkshire United U15
Competition: Janice Morton Memorial Cup
Venue: Newarthill
Date: Saturday 7th November 2015
Cleland BC met Lanarkshire United for a place in the Janice Morton Memorial Cup Quarter Final, On a rain soaked Saturday morning, the Cleland boys knew they would have to put in a professional performance to see them go through to face Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in the Quarter Finals.
Cleland started brightly, and I'm sure the midweek training session on attacking corners paid off as within a couple of minutes of the start of the match the home side took a short corner of which the ball was then crossed to the back post and captain Antony Taylor rose unchallenged to head in the opener.
1-0 then quickly turned 2-0, and from another corner Greg Taylor darted to the front post to divert the driven ball into the back of the net.
Cleland soon found themselves 3 goals up. Great passing down the right from Taylor Moon & Connor Phairs, they then found Greg Taylor on the edge of the penalty area unmarked, he calmly controlled the ball and then unleashed a 20yard strike into the top left hand corner of the net.
It wasn't long before it was 4-0, and Dean Cornes showed great skill to flick the ball into the path of Jack Moore in the centre circle. A Lionel Messi-esq style run followed, as Moore dribbled past 4 players before slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner from just inside the box.
With Cleland keeping up the attacking momentum, it was only a matter of time before they scored more. Goal number 5 came from excellent play down the right side from Taylor Moon & Connor Phairs before Connor crossed into the box for the unmarked Lewis Allen to volley the ball into the back of the net.
Cleland went 6-0 just before the break. Again the Cleland right side was causing major problems for Lanarkshire as Taylor Moon & Dean Cornes combined to allow Dean to play the ball through to Connor Phairs, and the big man fired the ball past the visitors' keeper.
Half Time: Cleland Boys Club 6-0 Lanarkshire United

An excellent first half showing allowed Cleland to make 5 subs at half time to mix it up slightly for the second period. A fairly even first 10 minutes at the start of the half with neither team really pushing forward in any sort of forceful fashion.
However, a poor goal kick from the Lanarkshire goalkeeper was quickly picked up by the Cleland midfield who played a great through ball to Lewis Allen, and he found the top corner of the net to score goal number 7 for Cleland.
A pass from the right from Reece Watson to the edge of the box was picked up by Dean Cornes, and he took up a position who fired a low shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net. 8-0.
Cleland scored number 9 when Connor Phairs played a neat one-two pass with of his team mates, before slotting in number 9.
Further goals from Aidan Melvin, Reece Watson, Connor Phairs & Aidan Rooney rounded off the scoring for the home side as they booked their place in the Quarter Finals up against Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.
An excellent team display from Cleland in soaking wet conditions, but a special mention goes to Jack Moore who more than deserved the man of the match award for a brilliant all round performance.
