Broomhill fight back to beat EKFC in Scottish Cup thriller

Written by

Fixture: Broomhill SC vs EKFC Blue U14
Competition: Scottish Youth FA Cup - R1
Venue: Scotstoun Stadium
Date: 19th September 2015

In fantastic sunshine these two teams from the Paisley & Johnstone District league served up a cracker. The added spice of two unbeaten teams and Broomhill being the current holders had the large crowd on their toes.

BSC started brightly with some slick passing and an early chance fell to Callum Imrie with his volley just going the other side of the post. EKFC then got into their stride and took the lead. A  stunning strike from Daniel Connor from 25 yards hit the top corner leaving keeper Luke Paul helpless. A few minutes later and EKFC were two up. A  high ball into the box took a strange spinning bounce over keeper Paul and an easy tap in for Dylan Collins. The holders were on the ropes and a quick change of formation got them back into the game and struck back when Logan McCarthy hit a shot from outside the box. BSC pushed on and a cross into the box was handled. Penalty for the home side and up stepped captain Gio Vezza. His shot thundered off the post and chance gone.

The away side pushed on spurred by the miss and pulled a penalty themselves. A  break into the box  by Lewis Payne was halted by BSC midfielder Cavan Burns. He looked to have got a touch on the ball but going to ground gives the referee a decision to make and he pointed to the spot.
Burns was booked and Payne stepped up and slotted home.

The BSC boys looked down and out and seemingly  a comment  was made to the referee who turned and pulled over Burns. He protested his innocence and looked a case of mistaken identity but the ref was having none of it.  A  second yellow card followed by red and the midfielder was off.

A total feeling of injustice pushed BSC on and indeed the fact they were losing their grip on the cup they won last season maybe helped them.

Up stepped Vezza with a trade mark free kick.  It hit the bar, bounce down and off the unfortunate keepers feet.
The half time whistle blew shortly afterwards and game on.

Half Time: Broomhill SC 2-3 EKFC Blue

The second half got under way and Broomhill seemed hungrier. The 10 men found space and their passing game kicked in and looked dangerous every time they came forward.  The equaliser came when the BSC striker Donohue went down in the box after a challenge by Ross Taylor. Up stepped Callum Shields who made sure this time.

Broomhill pressed for the winner and it came from a cross into the box. McCarthy seemed to knee it into the net and the BSC team went wild. EK tried to get on level terms and force the game into extra time but to no avail. Broomhill brought on the tall Ben Kilcoyne to shore things up and every BSC to a man fought hard for every ball.

The ref blew for full time which was met by huge celebrations from the team in yellow.

Full Time: Broomhill SC 4-3 EKFC Blue

This Youth Football cup tie had everything and huge credit must go to both teams & coaches. Played in a great spirit and EK gracious in defeat.

One sour note was young EKFC lad Euan Andrews went down in a challenge and looked to have broken an arm. We wish the lad a speedy recovery.

Broomhill march on to the 2nd round and look a solid outfit that pass from the back and will be there abouts this season again.

I'm sure EKFC will press on within their league and cups and look a force at this age group.
