In a scrappy, tight and exciting encounter, it was Cambuslang who prevailed with a last minute winner against EKFC Gold on a windy afternoon at Stenhousemuir to win the SYFA Central Region Cup. The game was set for penalties until Cambuslang’s perseverance and desire broke the deadlock minutes from the final whistle.
EKFC opened the scoring through Euan Aitken early on in the game. However Cambuslang hit back with Keiran Irwin towards the end of a quiet half. The second half was a midfield battle with opportunities few and far between, but it was Irwin again who scored the winner late into extra time to seal victory.
It was Cambuslang with the first chance of the tight match. A free kick from a good opportunity saw Declan Coleman’s hit fly wide of the left post after two minutes. Coleman was involved again minutes later when his corner found Jonathan McLean whose shot went way over the bar.
Despite the early Cambuslang pressure, East Kilbride were the team to take the lead. A misplaced pass in the Cambuslang defence saw Euan Aitken take advantage. He picked the ball up on the edge of the box and drove inward, with his eventual shot finding the top right corner of the net and EKFC were 1-0 up.
Chances were at a premium as both defences tightened. It took a moment of magic from Jack Hart to help put Cambuslang level. He picked up the ball on the left and drove towards the box skipping past two defenders in the process, his low cross found Kieran Irwin who made no mistake in putting the ball into the net despite the ‘keepers efforts.
Dylan Wilson showed great perseverance to push through into the box on a solo run and his effort went narrowly over the bar from 12 yards in what was the last chance of a tight half with defences on top.

The second half started well for Cambuslang, Irwin’s knockdown found Barry Platt and his smart turn saw him shoot just wide of the left post.
The midfield became the focus of the game as they battled to open up space for their strikers to get shots on goal, individual brilliance was beginning to show here as the teams struggled to open eachother up. Dylan Wilson was tearing up ground on the right wing and his pace was causing problems for the EKFC defence.
Despite a few half chances including a header from Jonathan Wills for EKFC, the game was at a standstill and extra time loomed.

Extra time proved to be as tough for both teams as before, with both teams tiring it was looking like the game would go to penalties. Marcus Redman kept Cambuslang in the game when a speculative shot from Ciaran Hughes looked destined for the far corner from 30 yards if not for Redman’s save.

Redman’s save would prove vital as minutes later deep into the second half of stoppage time, Cambuslang found the goal that would give them the win. In what looked like an easy cross to deal with turned out to be the assist to the goal, Jack Hart’s cross found Kieran Irwin who had managed to drift into the space between the centre halves and his header was executed perfectly as it flew over the ‘keeper and into the net. Irwin showed great technique and despite the best efforts of the East Kilbride attack, they would end up losing the final.

The full time whistle was met with relief and joy from the Cambuslang players and there was special praise for Irwin who persevered and scored a memorable goal in extra time to win what was most likely one of the toughest matches of their season.

Star Player
Cambuslang FC
Josh Kumar - the central defender looked solid when asked questions and made a number of key tackles and clearances to keep his team in the game as long as possible.
Keiran Irwin - scored both Cambuslang goals in what was a very tough game, showed desire right until the end to net the winning goal seconds from full time. Hard working player.
Magic Moment
Cambuslang FC
Aitken's goal. The player did well to nick the ball off of the defence and showed even greater composure to place the finish far out the 'keepers reach, showed real class in the finish.
The winning goal from Irwin. To score an exquisite header like that seconds from full time and penalties is very special. In a game of hard graft that was a moment of brilliance.
