Competition: Forth Valley FDA
On Tuesday 12th May Milton Reds 1998s under 17’s were at home to Steins Thistle in a League match. There were six ex-Milton players in the Stein’s line up and the recent matches between the sides were all close affairs and keenly contested.
It was known that this match would also be played in a similar fashion, with effort and desire likely to be the deciding factor on who would be the eventual victors.
The game was played on the grass at Braehead and although the underfoot conditions were good, the blustery wind would make control difficult.
Steins started the match well and with the wind advantage put Milton on the defensive. There were not many clear cut chances but Stein’s Jordan Brown did have an opportunity when he broke clear but fired narrowly past the post.
In the 30th minute Milton took the lead when Blair Robertson did really well down the right flank and fired in a terrific cross, which top marksman, Kros Brown finished off well.
Stein’s battled hard as they tried to get back level but the first half came to a close with Milton leading by a solitary goal.
Half Time: Milton Reds 1-0 Steins Thistle
The second half was only minutes old when Stein’s were reduced to ten men. Milton then took control and although now well on top, just could not get the second goal.
Milton were also reduced to ten men shortly after as both sides were returned to parity. Steins then scored to level the match after some great play by former Milton player, Deco.
To Milton’s credit they then took the game to their opponents and piled on the pressure. The away goal was under constant siege and it looked only a question of time before their defence would give way.
Milton then won a penalty, which captain Ross Leary stepped up and struck a fiercely in off the inside of the post and into the back of the net to put Milton one goal in front.
The rest of the game saw Milton well in control and they saw out the remaining time comfortably for a fine win.
After the match the majority of the players congratulated each other on their efforts in a good competitive game where the desire from both sides was abundantly clear.
