Wishaw WW progress to the semi's at the expense of Westwood

Written by  Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers

Fixture: Westwood Rovers v Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers
Competition: Under 16's Central Region Cup, Quarter Final
Date: 22/02/15

The Wishaw WW 99's went into this game having already knocked today's opponents out of one cup competition and won twice in the League. However they knew that today Westwood would be looking to get some revenge by knocking us out of the regional cup.

The game was played in atrocious conditions throughout the entire game with sleet, snow and rain as well as a strong wind. Both sets of boys should take great credit for putting on a great game despite having to battle against the elements.

Westwood started well with the wind behind them and were causing problems. The 99's held out and started to get the ball down and play a bit of football but final balls were just not coming off.

Westwood took the lead midway through the half when their right midfielder finished well after some good build up play. Wishaw rolled their sleeves up but just could not get things going and it would be the hosts who doubled the advantage with ten minutes left of the first half.

They were awarded a free kick on the left wing, its was struck well and wind assisted flew over keeper Sheridan and in at the back post to put Westwood two up.
Wishaw defended well in the final ten minutes of the half and created an opportunity for themselves. Hadden created the space and struck a good shot which was well held by the home keeper.

Half Time : Westwood Rovers 2-0 Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers

Wishaw knew they had the wind in the second period and got right back into the game within five minutes of the restart. The ball arrived at Leonards feet in the box, he beat his man and drove the ball towards goal. The keeper parried and there was Kyle to smash home to reduce the deficit.

The boys now were in the front foot and looking likely to level the game up although the home team were always threatening but again our defenders stopped everything that came their way.

The eqaliser arrived midway through the half, the ball was played into the box. It fell to Kyle who picked his spot and drove the ball home from the penalty spot.
The boys were now pressing for a winner in normal time but despite some good efforts could just not get one. The best chance fell Lafferty after a good Bell corner, despite his effort the keeper made a good stop to prevent Wishaw going ahead.

Full Time : Westwood Rovers 2-2 Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers

Wishaw started the first period of extra time well and again created some great opportunities. It was again from a corner that the best chance arrived. Bochniak met it at the far post and his powerfull downward header looked in only for the home keeper to produce a stunning save low down to his corner. The first period of ET ended with the score still level.

The boys despite tiring and playing in freezing conditions kept going for the second period and grabbed a winner midway through. Leonard picked the ball up on halfway drove forward and slipped Kyle in on the left. He saw the keeper advancing and lifted it over him and into the net to put the boys in front for the first time in the game and grab himself a well deserved hat trick. Westwood battled hard for the last few minutes but the boys defended well and held on to advance to the semi final stage.

This was another great game put on by two sides who know each other very well. The conditions today were horrendous but both sets of boys should take great credit for the way the game was played. Also to those watching for supporting the boys throughout normal time and extra time.

Well done boys excellent team performance and to win the game from being 2-0 down showed a great fighting spirit that you all have.

After Extra Time : Westwood Rovers 2-3 Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers
