Newcraighall Leith Vics 2001s sailed into the 4th round of the Scottish Youth FA Cup with an emphatic win over travelling Syngenta Juveniles. In extremely windy weather conditions not ideal for both players and spectators, the game managed to kick off exactly on 12pm at a cold Newcraighall Park.

The threat from crosses into the box was to prove important for Newcraighall on the day. Sean Ward found himself with space on the left time and time again and his crosses were pinpoint. Ward’s delivery found Yrick Gallentes but the striker shot wide.

With only eight minutes on the clock, Newcraighall found themselves ahead. The goal supplied from Ward and the first of many assists for the winger. A back post corner found an unmarked Andrew Mackay to nod home and get his side off the mark.

Just two minutes later, Newcraighall had doubled their lead. A long ball over the top from midfield released Brandon Blair, who coolly slotted past Euan Mackay to grab his first goal of the game.

Syngenta were stunned in the 11th minute when Newcraighall added another and showed no sign of slowing down. After excellent persistence from Gallentes, he managed to pick out Fynlay Connor in the box, whose dragged shot fell kindly to Blair with the big striker making no mistake from close range.

The visitors now had a near impossible task on their hands so early on in this game.

Most of the Newcraighall joy was coming from the left hand side through the pairing of Gallentes and Ward with Blair lurking in the box like a true striker should.
In the 31st minute, Blair took the tie further out of Syngenta’s reach with his second. After a powerful Gallentes run down the left, he looped a cross into the box for Blair to tower above the ‘keeper and head home.

On the stroke of half-time it was 5-0. With the most impressive goal of the game so far, Newcraighall went into the break very comfortable. Failure to clear in defence, saw Louis Flucker pick up the ball on the edge of the box. The midfielder prodded it onto Gallentes who played a lovely cushioned header into the path of Blair and again the sriker showed brilliant composure to simply place it past the ‘keeper.

As the second half began, the Syngenta players showed no lack of urgency or desire in their play despite the demoralising scoreline as they still battled to get back into the game.

The waves of attack kept coming from the hosts and they made it 6 early into the second half. A sweeping move from right to left started with Flucker passing to Jack McAlpine who played a defence splitting ball in behind for Ward to latch onto. Ward again whipped in a perfect cross and substitute John Robertson put it away with a diving header.

Syngenta’s first attempt came late on through Mark Smith. After good link up play with Dylan Thomson, Smith’s resulting shot blazed over from just outside the box.

Newcraighall furthered their lead after a short back pass in the Syngenta defence presented Blair with yet another one on one with the keeper and the result was the same with Blair tucking it under the goalkeeper for another.

After another spell of pressure from the home side, including a cheeky ‘rabona’ attempt from Ward, the ball made its way back to him on his favoured left side. A beautifully floated cross found Blair for the 5th time as he headed in.

Moments later, it was a carbon copy of the previous goal. Ward beating his man and crossing for Robertson to get in on the act this time.

As the game drew to a close, the wind had been truly taken out of the Syngenta boys as Newcraighall added two late goals.  Connor with a long range left-footed strike over the keeper and Blair’s 6th goal after a good assist from James Smith.

Despite the scoreline, Syngenta gave it their all but were defeated by a very intelligent, technically brilliant Newcraighall side. An excellent performance from the hosts going forward but equally disciplined in defence.

Newcraighall coach, Ian Fergus said: ‘It was the best I’ve seen my boys play. They took their chances and moved the ball quickly but it was important for them not to get complacent. That’s what we wanted from them’.

John Daly, Newcraighall manager said: ‘Yhey were excellent today and now we look ahead to the big one against Edina Hibs in the league next week’.

Newcraighall: has to be 6 goal man, Brandon Blair. A superb showcase of finishing and really worked hard to put the Syngenta defence under pressure at every chance.
Dylan Thomson looked very comfortable on the ball and his touch and dribbling ability were exceptional in some cases.

Sean Ward’s attempted ‘rabona’ was something I haven’t seen in a youth match before. Although it didn’t quite find its way into the net, to have the confidence and skill to try and pull it off was impressive and shows the freedom this young team are allowed to play with.
Mark Smith's attempt from just outside the box was so close for Syngenta.
